KWL

Teacher's pet is a very useful webpage for a teacher.I learn to design several activities through using it. You can create exercises, quizes.. without wasting time, with just one click. I think it is very helpful tool in preparing crossword puzzles because the webpage is thinking and organizing it with clues instead of you.

KWL

I know that teacher's pet is something related to word but I don't know its details and how to use it effectively. I want to learn it in details to use in an effective way.

In the end of the activity, I learn how to create several activities in a very short time period for my students. It is helpful in terms of saving time and creating interesting thinks without thinking much on them. I learn to create crossword puzzles, sentences with punctuational removes, fill in the gap,antonym,synonym... activities very quickly.

CTE 319&KWL

I do not know much about interactive webpages but I want to learn every aspect of it to use in my future profession to be a more creative teacher and get the attention of students.

By dealing with these interactive webpages, I learn to design activities by using hot potatoes. By this, I can create matching tests, cloze tests or fill in the gaps test. Also these pages help us to save time because they are the shortest and the easiest way of designing activities. Additionally, I think that the students will love  these types of activities because you jan attach video clip to the fill in the gaps tests. This makes students both enjoy themselves and learn the related vocabulary by listening.

Vocabulary Profiling CTE 319 Data Driven Learning

The readability and concordance tools are very useful in designing materials. For instance, I will use readability tool to measure if the text is suitable to the English level of students. Also, I will use concordance to emphasize the usage of some vocabulary that we will work on. I will show them in which surroundings these words are being used. When students have a chance to see more examples, they understand it better.
But sometimes, there can be some problems. As computer hasn't mind and does everything automatically, it sometimes makes errors. So as teachers, we should double check it before sharing with students.

KWL

I do not know anything about the nature of readability of the text. But I think that it is something related to reading a text (but I haven't idea about from which perspective such as grammar or vocabulary..) I want to learn it in order to use it in my future class because it seems very useful in reading a text.

From the activity, I learn that readability means how difficult or easy a tezt is to read it. When you copy the text and paste it to the site, it shows you a percentage of 'Flesh Reading Ease'. The higher avarage means more readability.

integrating blogs

It is very helpful and useful nowadays to use such blogs because of the developed technology.Almost everyone have a chance to reach something through internet. So creating blogs and following students, teachers, collegues or friends via these blogs is very fruitful. The old methods, which are basicly written papers, are problematic in various cases such as storing, reading and the most important getting feedback. When I start using blogs in my class, first of all, I will make my students to create their own blogs. So that I can easily send them assignments, reading or they can receive their grading through these blogs. Also, They have a chance to reply and get the answer if something is not clear. Furthermore, blogs allow both teachers and students to be in contact all the time so they can receive feedbacks to each other.

vocabulary profiling CTE 319 data driven learning

Lexis in English texts means the vocabulary of the passage. I want to learn the most common words as they classified according to their functions and roles. Moreover, I want to learn some resources that I can use in my future profession.

I learn the wordle, lextutor, color of words, concordance, frequency trainer and vocabulary profile which are very useful and helpful materials for a teacher. As a teacher, you can use wordle and you can get the main idea of the passage from the most frequent words. By that way, you do not have to read whole passage in detail. Also, by using lextutor, I learn about the word thypes which are emphasized through colors. I will use these methods in my future teaching experience so that both my students and I will save time. Additionally, I believe that these techniques make the word system more clear in students' minds so they can understand better.

vocabulary profiling

The frequency of the words are different in each text. a word can normally be counted as the least frequent word but in a text, which is about that or related word, can contain the word for several times. So when you put it in a word cloud, the most stressed one can be the word which is the least frequent. So frequency depends on the content of a text. Of course, the computer is better at picking out key words than us because it scans it automatically so there is no chance to skip any word. Also, the use of concordance is useful in seeing words in the context. So that students have chance to see how these words are used and can guess the meaning from the surrounding if they do not know. This gives me a different perspective on the words that I cannot get from just reading the text. For instance, in the text I choose, 'fertilise' is the key word and while I read the passage, I realized that it can be used in in different forms depending on the surrounding such as in passive form, noun form.. etc. So, by using it in several forms makes it the most frequent word in the text even if it is not at the top of the frequency list. In addition, a tool like Multi-conc helps students discover the lexico-grammar of a word that they can see in which surrounding they should use noun form, active form, verb form.. etc. I think showing the usage of the web page for 1-2 times to the students will be enough for them to learn how to use it.

vocabulary profiling

As a teacher, I could use vocabulary profile to identify the frequency of the words. By identifying them in the text, I will make my students work on the words, starting from the most frequent ones. I think that learning the most frequent ones is more important than others because they are the basic parts of the language and pronunciation like 'she/he/I/ am/is/are'... You cannot communicate if you do not know the most frequent ones which are the main parts of language. So, as a teacher, I will overweigh such words. Additionally, it is possible to get students as learners to use a vocabulary profiler. For instance, as a teacher, I will give them a news article and want them to scan it through this tool. So that they can classify the frequency and realize the basic points which are necessarily parts for a language. Furthermore, word cloud is similar to the vocabulary profile in some cases that they are both emphasize the frequency and usage of the words. On the other hand, they have differences. The word cloud is to see the most repeated words to get the main idea what the text is about. In contrast, vocabulary profile is to see the most frequent, basic words of the language in the text. The words are classified into colors to emphasize their frequency. So that the student can realize which words are more beneficial to learn and which ones are the basic ones that will help him/her in the use of language.

vocabulary profiling

A vocabulary profiler seems similar to a 'prism'  for lexis. As you look directly to the light, you just see it as it is but when you look at it through a prism then you see it as the combination of different colors. It is same for lexis in a text. When you read a passage, it looks as it is but when you try to classify them according to their frequency or their function, then it becomes multi-colored. Additionally, I do not think that the same word will always have the same color in different genres because the way of reflecting the ideas are not same in every genre. For example, in poetry, poet says a word to reflect a different meaning through it whereas a story teller says the same word in a different purpose. So frequency of the same word in different genres is not same

vocabulary profiling

I think that a non-native speaker would score the test better because a native speaker knows the most of the words in their language even if these words are not used so frequently. But a non-native speaker can realize frequency levels better because, if the word is familiar to him/her, then it is frequently used but if it is not familiar, it is not a frequent word for him/her. Also, I was surprised by the frequency levels of some words because I heard some of them for the first time and clicked on the least frequent button but they are more frequent ones instead. Furthermore, I do not think that it varies from American English to British English although they have some differences between their vocabularies. The differences mean same in both versions. For instance, one calls 'soccer' while another calls 'football' to the same thing. Lastly, It is good for teachers that they will teach from the most frequent ones to the least. This also helps students in terms of learning easily and they can communicate easily when they know frequent ones even if they do not know the least frequent ones. The reason is that, nearly all the speakers know the most frequent ones so that you can both easily understand and others can also understand you while communicating.

vocabulary profiling

Knowing the most commonly used words helps in teaching because as a teacher knows more words, s/he can easily communicate with students (at their English levels,as they can understand him/her) or foreigners and s/he can easily understands what others say to him/her. So broader vocabulary helps you to both communicate easily and understand others. Students can learn these common words naturally from texts but teachers should also teach these words in order to make students use them properly and grammatically in the context. Also, they will learn what these words mean by the way. Furthermore, we should focus on vocabulary by doing activities because only texts are nor enough to teach words. By activities, students work directly on the meaning and learn them through revising. Additionally, both dictionaries and word lists are useful in learning vocabulary. When the student has difficulty in guessing the meaning from the context, they can look for it from these tools to make it clear.

vocabulary profiling

It is very often that students fail to guess the meaning of an unknown word, especially in a high level English sentence. Because, in such a senntence, all words are high level. For instance, 'peruse' can be used instead of 'read'. If other words are easy and known ones, then 'peruse' is predictable. It depends on the English level of the sentence whether you will have difficulty in guessing or not. It sometimes also happens to me that I cannot predicts from the context and I need to check it from a dictionary.
Because our coursebooks do not aim to teach us vocabulary directly, they do not include lots of 'guess the meaning from context' activities. It is good for teachers to develop their sense of frequency in terms of teaching because more the teacher uses the words means more the students understand and send these words to long-term memory. So by this way, students broaden their vocabulary and understand under what conditions s/he should use these words.

Teaching Ideas CTE319 Data Driven Learning

In the future, as technology develops day by day, I plan to incorporate technology into my teaching. I will use these web pages to help students to get the main idea.
  • I will try to make students guess what the text is about without skimming it
  • By this way, their intelligence abilities will increase
  • By concordance, they will have a chance to see under which conditions each word is used and they will see in which environment does a writer use such a word. So they will get tha idea about usage of the word.

DDL TASK 3

The word cloud in concordance provide you a chance to see the most frequent words used in the given text. From this word cloud, you can see in which environment does the each word be used. By this way, you do not have to look for them in a long text to see the sentence to get the idea. It is very helpful to understand for what purposes the writer uses these words such frequently. Additionally, you can use this method to get a quicker idea, to save time and to see the usage/environment of each frequent word.

DDL TASK2

By a vocabulary profile, you can understand the main idea of the text. When I first skimmed the given text, I tried to guess what it is about but in longer and complex texts, it is not possible to guess without reading. So this web page helps us to get an idea what the text is about by highlighting the key words. For instance, when I tried it on the given passage, it shows that it's about language learning. The web page prioritises the words according to their frequency. It is useful in teaching English because students have not chance to read every passage word by word. So, by this method, they skim it quickly and get the main idea before reading in detail. Additionally, you can apply it to each paragraph to see what each paragraph is about.

DDL TASK 1

In a f2f classroom, using DDL principles seems useful and easy because it is learner-centered. By this method, all the teacher's attention is on students. So when a teacher pays attention to each student, then learning can occur easily and effectively. Moreover, authentic learning is also important because real life situations always attract students' attention because these situations seem meaningful to them. I think that DDL is more suited to individual work because as I mentioned before, teacher has a chance to pay attention to each student individually by the way. Computers and the internet enhance data-driven learning in some cases. For example, because this method deals with authentic materials rather than ready made or off-the-shelf learnware, the internet is useful to read news, research, new knowledge which are parts of the real life.
